In this free drum lesson I'm going to teach you the intro drum fill to the song Drive In Drive Out, played by one of my favourite drummers, Carter Beauford. This drum fill uses one of Carter's signature drum licks, a pattern used by many other drummers as well, to devastating effect!

The Dave Matthews Band is one of those groups that you either love or hate. I love them, thanks mainly to the drumming genius of Carter!

"Drive In Drive Out" - Drum Fill (0:18 Album Version)

The song is played in the time signature of 6/8 or 12/8 depending on how you want to count it. It starts with some stabs that the whole band play. The last set of stabs ends on beat 1 of the first bar above, Carter then comes back in on beat 4 of the bar, playing superbly quiet. He plays a signature drum lick, commonly known as "The Herta". The Herta consists of four strokes played through three counted notes. One of the counted notes is doubled and in this case it is the first counted note of each group of three. You could think of counting it as 1+2 3, 1+2 3.

The Herta drum lick is played up until beat 4 of the third bar whilst increasing in volume. On beat 4, Carter then plays a series of strikes between the snare drum and the toms, moving down the toms and alternating the hands. It ends with two strokes on the floor tom on beats 5 and 6 of the fourth bar.

This is a great fill to learn, even if it means you just get the Herta under your belt!
