"Black Dog" Famous Drum Beat Notation

Black Dog Free Drum Lesson Bonham Zeppelin

Start Point: 0:50

Drummer: John Bonham

Artist: Led Zeppelin

It consists of five bars containing four counted beats each and one bar (first bar) containing two beats.

The main groove starts in the second bar where Bonham plays eighth notes on the bell of the Ride cymbal with his right hand throughout. His left hand plays all of the snare drum and high tom notes.

Use the right hand as a reference to help guide you with placing the left hand and bass drum in the correct places. These notes are either falling on or in between the right hand.

Notice that there is no bass drum played on beat 1 of bars 2 to 6. A strong bass drum note on the 'a' of beat 2 in each of these bars really gives this groove forward momentum.
