Hand And Foot Eighth Note Triplet Fills - Bonham & Gadd Ideas

I was teaching a drum lesson today in Portsmouth (Hampshire) and the lesson subject was on Jazz style triplet licks/fills/comp ideas.

I wanted to give the pupil a definitive list of hand and foot triplet permutations to practice and master. These ideas are shown below.

Triplet Hand Foot Ideas (Two Snare Notes)

These three bars show all the combinations possible within triplets between the hands and feet involving two hand notes (shown here on the snare).

Play each bar on its own to start off with and get used to feel of the triplets against a metronome. Notice how it feels with the single bass drum note moving against the downbeat from bar to bar.

Try playing each bar as a one bar drum fill with your own "shuffled" or "straight" drum beat. You can also try moving the hands around the drums but it must still flow as triplets. Ensure the bass drum note smoothly flows in-between the hands.

Triplet Hand Foot Ideas (Two Bass Drum Notes)

Here we have the same idea but now its the bass drum that plays two notes. These exercises require a strong bass drum technique in order to play them fast. You could always try these licks on a double bass drum pedal if available.

The same practice suggestions and variations apply to these three bars as they did for the first three bars. Try each on their own, play as a drum fill and then move the hands around the kit.
