"The Kill" Chorus Drum Beat (30 Seconds To Mars)
Drum Beat Notation
The time signature for this drum groove is 12/8. This simply means that there are 12 eighth notes in the bar. Shannon plays the crash cymbal with his right hand on all 12 of those eighth notes. These are counted 123123123123 etc.
The bass drum is played on beat 1, the + of beat 2 and the + of beat 3. All bass drum notes that fall on the + are played in between the right hand crash cymbals. The third block of three notes has the same bass drum pattern.
The second block of three notes has two snare drums played in a row followed by a bass drum. All three are played at the same time as the right hand.
The last block of three notes has a snare drum on the 1st and 3rd beat. The two bass drums are played on beat 2 and the + of beat 2. It feels like your bass drum is leading into the snare drum on beat 3.
