Rob's Drum Licks #6 - RRLRR Drum Beat Lick | Free Video Drum Lesson

Difficulty Level _ Intermediate

In this new series of free video drum lessons, I want to focus on some of my favourite drum licks, fills, grooves and patterns.

This video drum lesson is based on a drum beat idea that I've heard called the the "King Kong" beat. The idea is that you play a couple of doubles with the right hand either side of the backbeat on beats 2 and 4.

In the lesson I show you how to apply different bass drum patterns to this lick as well as how to incorporate ghost notes to flesh it out even further.

Rob's Drum Licks #5 - Five Note Sticking & Bass Drum Linear Fill | Free Video Drum Lesson

Difficulty Level _ Advanced

In this new series of free video drum lessons, I want to focus on some of my favourite drum licks, fills, grooves and patterns.

This video drum lesson is based on the popular five note sticking (RLRLL), with a single bass drum foot being added to the beginning of the pattern creating this basic six note lick - FRLRLL. This obviously works very well played through triplets.

As a way to extend and take this further, I also give you some ideas where you can combine this lick with various three note triplet conjunctions, and even using the double bass pedal to add a bit of spice.

In this video, I've taken a drum lick that I first heard Vinnie Colaiuta play first. It involves substituting the right hand within a RLL pattern with the bass drum foot. Very simple to understand and practice but tricky to play at "Vinnie" tempo! :)

Timshel (My Band) - Live @ The Hobbit Pub, England (05/04/13)

This gig was not intended to be released or uploaded to the web...until now...

Back in April 2013, my band Timshel and I performed a gig at the Hobbit Pub in Southampton, England. We've headlined here many times before and are firm favourites with the locals. It's a great venue with lots of energy, charm and character. Check out their website by clicking here if you like.

By the way, this is the Pub that Stephen Fry tweeted about when the Tolkien estate tried (and failed) to get the venues name changed...justice prevailed in the end though!

Mistakes, tempo rushes, forgotten sections - it's ALL here. I wanted to give you a real idea of what it's like to play in a band and how someone like myself deals with those inevitable errors...usually with a big smile and a chuckle if I'm honest.

Anywho, I hope you enjoy the music and if you're ever in the area then please come say hello! You can check out our Timshel Band Facebook Page by clicking here.

"Ah, last night I made love to my wife six times," the guitarist responded, "and this morning she made me a wonderful omelet and told me she could never love another man." When the drummer remained silent, the guitarist smugly asked, "And how many times did you make love to your wife last night?" "Once," he replied. "Only once?" the bassplayer arrogantly snorted. "Manic Depression" Drum Solo - Free Video Drum Lesson (Jimi Hendrix & Mitch Mitchell)

Mitch Mitchell

In this free video drum lesson we're going to take a look at the eight bar drum solo from the song "Manic Depression" by Jimi Hendrix. It of course features the great Mitch Mitchel on drums!

The whole song is in the time signature of 3/4, meaning that there are three counted beats to every bar.

Mitch effortlessly weaves different subdivisions together to make a rhythmic solo that excites and fascinates. Not only does he throw in some "Bonham Triplets" but also two of his favourite rudiments; the Paradiddle and the Six Stroke Roll

"Next Year" Drum Fills - Free Video Drum Lesson (Foo Fighters & Grohl/Hawkins)

Dave Grohl

In this free video drum lesson I'm going to teach you how to play three of my favourite drum fills from the song "Next Year" by the Foo Fighters.

The drummer on the album was Taylor Hawkins but Dave Grohl took over drumming duties for this one song; and with great results as you might have expected!

The three drum fills are played in a linear style of drumming meaning that no two limbs fall at the same time. Dave Grohl expertly incorporates his bass drum foot into these drum fills to create really cool sounding, multi-layered fills.

Don't forget to also download the free PDF below and happy drumming to you!
