The Bonham Triplets - Cool Drum Fill/Lick

Time for some new lick and fill ideas. Lets look at a classic...

The Bonham Triplets is a cool drum lick first made famous by the great John Bonham. It's a basic pattern but this is what makes it so great and easy to play super fast.

The Basic Pattern

Here are the three most common variations on the Bonham Triplets. Either playing the bass drum at the end, beginning or in the middle.

Bars 1 an 2 are by the most common way this lick is played as it's the easiest to perform. Bar is still a great lick though and I will often throw it into my playing for some fun and frolics!

Try to practice these variations so that all three notes flow into each other. All three notes have to be played smoothly so that when it's sped up it sounds uber sweet!

I like to use Bar 1 the most as I find it easier to start the pattern with my hands. There is something mentally harder about starting a pattern with the bass drum foot that I seem to be affected by as well as most drummers I teach.

Drum Fill Idea 1

Here's a cool way the basic pattern can be used through sixteenth note triplets. Note the snare drum that purposefully lands on beat 4 of the bar maintaining a strong back beat throughout the fill itself.

I have written a brand new lesson on this lick so why not read the rest of this article by clicking "Bonham Triplets" - Drum Fill & Lick Ideas

The lesson gives many more variations and ideas for this classic fill/solo pattern so check it now.

Have fun!

NEW Kasabian and The Futureheads Drum Charts...

I thought It was about time that I uploaded some new drum charts to the sister site at www.Videos.DrumsTheWord.com and so wrote out fully notated drum charts (scores) for both "Fire" by Kasabian and the "Heartbeat Song" by The Futureheads. Both these tracks feature some simple but exciting drum parts that the beginner or intermediate drummer can really get their teeth into.

These tracks feature the drumming talents of Ian Matthews from Kasabian and Dave Hyde from The Futureheads. Two drummers of notable ability.

New Song Tutorials - Drum Play Alongs (21 Guns, Uprising and Californication)

So the sister site www.Videos.DrumsTheWord.com is growing steadily and I'm really pleased with how its starting to take shape.

I'm making sure that I add new content on a weekly basis and this week decided to focus on song specific drum lessons. These full 30 minute lessons are very satisfying to make as I really get to just talk to the camera and flow rather than the other drum videos which require more of a scripted presentation style due to their exercise based nature.

I'm really pleased with the two song tutorials I've done so far; Uprising by Muse and 21 Guns by Green Day. Both are proving popular already and it's very satisfying for me to get emails back from drummers saying how much they appreciate the lessons and to keep it up. It's very rewarding!

The next song tutorial I'm going to be uploading is for the song Californication by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. I just need to edit the video together and I can upload in the next couple of days. In the video I describe all of the groove variations Chad Smith explores within the song including all the little ghost notes and drags that he loves to play so much. This song is a great lesson in groove construction and I can't wait to share it with all of you.

Happy drumming!

Rob

Ray Luzier Double Bass Drum Fill Idea

I watched Ray Luzier in a drum video a while back talking about a very simple pattern he likes to use around the drums that involve the double bass drum pedal. While practising the drums this morning I suddenly realised that I use this idea all the time in my own playing. It's such a simple combination of ideas that most drummers that have been using double bass drum pedal for a while will have most probably played it already.

The fill idea consists of two individual parts that are put together into one pattern. Here are the two parts...

The first bar on the left shows a six note pattern with four notes played on the hands and two notes played on the double bass drum pedal. Of course, this pattern can be played with one bass drum foot depending on how efficient and speedy you are with the one foot!

The second bar on the right shows a three note pattern with one note played on the hands and two notes played with the double bass drum.

What you can do next is to combine these two patterns and play them through sixteenth note triplets like this...
