Hey, I have to put together a few jazz songs for an audition. Does anybody know any good songs i could play along with? perhaps some art blakey or miles davis songs? Coltrane?
I'm no Jazz expert and I'm afraid that my knowledge on the Jazz classics is a little dodgy but I'm sure that some other drummers reading this might be able to to make a few suggestions.
I've always been a big fan of Dave Brubeck with the great Joe Morello on drums as well as Thelonious Monk. These two artists have the ability to bridge the gap between hardcore Jazz and more melodic playing. You can actually hum along to a lot of their music rather than only just the first and last repetitions in a ten minute jam-athon. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of Jazz music exactly because the musicians are pushing themselves and stretching the ear but for the more melody orientated out there these two are a bit more listenable...in my humble opinion.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help and let us know how the audition went. Best of luck and happy drumming!
