I am new to the site and think its excellent. have only been playing a few months. Can play most of the beginner beats at 60 but struggle if I speed up. Should I just leave the speed to later and concentrate on learing new beats / fills at 60. What I would really find helpful was if I could print off a copy of the beats you demonstrate. Is there any way of doing this or will I just have to write them down?

Hey Kezzy

What i would suggest for you to do, is play along with your favorite songs... plug in with some headphones and get on your set and play along. Even if the drumming is more complicated than your current abilites, just play along with the groove at a pace and beat you know. This will help smooth your fills and help you keep time. But when learning new grooves/fills, definitely play along to a metronome and keep it slow until you got the muscle memory going in your wrists/legs . After a bit of time and practice you should definitely improve.

Goodluck!

That's some great advice

That's some great advice Nick, couldn't have put it better myself!

Playing along to music even if you can't quite replicate what the drummer is doing is such a fun and effective way to improve. It's all I did every day when I first started to play the drums!

Hi Kezzy, Thanks for your

Hi Kezzy,

Thanks for your interest in this site and the lovely compliments. I'm pleased you find it so useful!

My advice is to work on increasing the tempo on the beginner beats first before trying to learn too many new skills/beats/fills. That way you'll have the basics mastered and be able to use the beats when playing along to your favourite tunes which are of course at various tempos (not just 60bpm).

Speed will come with regular and careful practice so don't feel rushed in trying to get faster (no pun intended). Be patient and your ability to play faster will come naturally in time.

If you do feel bored of practising the same beats then try new ideas/lessons out as long as this doesn't replace your regular practice of the basics entirely. We all like to mix things up in our practice from time to time so check out some of the other lessons on this site. Perhaps try out some of the rudiments as these are great for building up your stick control and can be really fun when moved around the drums.

As far as printing out the beats is concerned, I'm afraid that I haven't built this into the site yet but you could copy the exercise images (right click the image), load up a word document and then paste them into that. You could then print out the word document instead.

Do let me know if you have any further questions or problems that I can help you with and the best of luck with your drumming!

Rob
