Before i ask questions let me start by saying by far this is the best tutorial site i have seen especially it teaches modern song for a bonus. Thank you for creating this!

1) im kind of confused with the Californication chart, I tried to put it together from the video and here is how i understood it and im pretty sure i didn't get it right

-so for the whole song you just play the verse beat which was the four bars over and over till you hit the fill?

-then there is a fill going into the first chorus four bars

-the chorus goes back to the verse beat  except we use the ride cymbal and eight notes h.hat foot

-then you say fill 1 of chorus 1 and 2 which is four bars which i don't know where to put?

-then you say verse 2 fill 1 into chorus 2 and 3 same as previous fill except it incorporates the crashes and Floor tom

-chorus 3 fill for the dream of californication...

-fill end of chorus 1 2 and 3

- then a 2 bar long fill with the ride cymbal?

so how do i put all of these together? i'm kinda lost. any chart? thanks a lot!!!

Thanks for the compliments

Thanks for the compliments Cansheet, I'm really pleased that you are finding this site useful!

I'm afraid that I haven't got time at the moment to go into great detail answering your thorough question (which I do appreciate!). You're asking the same question I asked myself all those years back when I first started to play along to the Peppers.

Without sounding too dismissive, I really wouldn't worry about the all the small details when learning a song for fun. It doesn't matter whether it's ride or Hi-Hat or exactly which fill is played when. What I used to do was simply listen to the track lots while air drumming. The sections would sink in naturally so when I actually did get behind a kit I would just play from memory, you know?

If you watch the Smith-meister play live you'll notice that even he mixes things up a bit and never really plays exactly what's on the record, especially when it comes to the fills. The grooves are kept the same pretty much but the drum fills are usually improvised a little as these are not essential for the song. A drummer has certain un-written rights that they can enforce whenever they like live...to change and mix things up as long as the groove isn't interrupted and it still works with the song.

My best advice for you is just to play...lots. Over time, little bits of the song will slot into place and you can learn so much just from listening. Charts are only supposed to be a guideline and I always encourage my pupils, once they have the parts practised, to just let go and use their ears - not their eyes.

Saying this however, I will endeavour to right a chart out for this song as soon as I get some time as this is something that I want to do also. I'll keep you posted.

In the meantime, put the song on, pick up your sticks and just play along on some pillows with your eyes shut. You'll be surprised how quickly and naturally you learn from using just your ears. Honestly, you can't beat it...no pun intended.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help and happy drumming!

Thanks Applepeared!

Your suggestions have been noted, there's a lot of drummers out there with a lot of love for Chad Smith. Definitely something I want to get into. Please see my reply to Cansheet above for advice on learning the song.

Ahh, Foo Fighters. Yes, yes, yes! Great suggestions. I just wish there were more hours in the day so that I could get all these charts and videos out quicker! Look out for some Foo Fighter lessons in the future.

No chart for Californication yet BretherenOrange, I hope to get it sorted soon.

Thanks!
