sound proofing a small room?
Hey everyone, I am wondering if there is a cheap way to keep my drums from rattling the neighborhood? , I have 2 story house and my drum are in a upstairs bedroom, was thinking about trying to do something very cheap to deaden some of the sounds going thru the walls/window.
any advice would be appreciated

Hey Black,
Most of the noise that your neighbours are going to hear is escaping through your window. Hanging thick drapes will reduce the sound enormously but this can be tricky to put up and not very attractive.
Laying carpet on the floor especially under your drum kit will also help as the sound travels through the floor boards really easily. Perhaps you could place a thick rug under the drum kit.
Try placing some insulation tape or weather strips around the door and window frames as sealing up any cracks in the room will also help. Again around the door and especially the window is where most of the noise pollution will escape.
What I used to do when I was younger was place cut pillow cases over each drum when I played. Of course, this is not ideal and did affect the feel and sound of the drums but it reduced the noise by half. You could also practice with Rod sticks or brushes, not ideal but it works.
Unless you're willing to spend a lot of money on installing hung ceilings or secondary walls there aren't many other affective ways of doing this. Hopefully someone else reading this will be able to make some further suggestions as this is such a common problem it would be great to get some further advice and suggestions on it.

yeah theres not a lot of solutions to this common problem unless you have buckets of cash to properly soundproof!! but pro mark and HQ make silencing pads which you can use to cut the noise down!! only downfall is theyre roughly 140 quid for a whole set so when i was setting up a few kits for kids at christmas we had a roll of carpet underlay which is the same material as the drum pads and it cuts up really easy!! just place each drum hoop on the underlay and mark and cut!! its nice and cheap and effective. other solution is a material called egg box foam!! furniture factories are the most likely to have it. measure your window and stick it up and it absorbs a lot of sound!! can be expensive though.
oops looks like I replied to my own thread

Thanks for the reply Rob,
I was thinking the window was the main culprit.
I am not worried about all the noise just trying to keep the peace a little
I am going to make a small sound shield I can put in the window and hopefullly something that can be easily removed when I want.
