Disclaimer: Well, more of an excuse really...I recorded these drum videos way back when I first started offering free video drum lessons to the online drumming community. These were some of my first video drum lessons and so, as a consequence, the lighting and sound isn't very good and my on screen teaching style had not really been developed at this stage. Anyway, with my excuses out of the way I hope you can still enjoy the quality content of these videos, as I like to think that hasn't changed at all!
I wish you the best of luck on learning to play the drums. Remember to be patient when learning something new on the kit, practice regularly and above all else...enjoy the journey! Please email me at at rob@drumstheword.com if you have any questions at all!

More Popular Beginner Drum Grooves
These drum grooves continue on from the beginner video drum lessons found in Beginner Video Drum Lessons. In this lesson we take those first drum beats and develop the bass drum part still further to create new and cool sounding grooves.
The bass drum is by far the most dynamic part of the drummers arsenal when it comes to changing the feel of a drum beat. The bass drum tends to follow the melody of the song or bass line whilst the drummer maintains a steady pulse with the right hand on the hi-hat and the left hand on the snare drum.
During most drum beats the right hand tends to play either eighth notes or quarter notes so these lessons will continue to use these two very popular right hand patterns. It's the bass drum that we will be focusing on...just as your professional drummer would.
Being able to play the same bass/snare drum pattern whilst the right hand plays either eighth notes or quarter notes over the top will develop your coordination, sense of timing and most importantly, will give you more options behind the drum kit when it comes to playing along to music.
I wish I'd been told this stuff when I first started to learn the drums but I was self taught...this is my way of saving you the pain I went through.
Video Structure & Practice Suggestions
Each video demonstrates the eighth note drum beat first and then the quarter note drum beat second, both slowly and fast.
Practice each drum beat on it's own first so that you feel comfortable starting and stopping and playing it at a range of different tempos.
You could then play the two bars (both eighth note and quarter note) one after the other in a loop. Aim to loop the two bars round and round until you can change from one right hand pattern to the other with minimal mistakes...or none, ideally!
The quarter note drum beats can be played much faster than the eighth note grooves simply because the right hand is playing less notes. This is a really useful aspect of the quarter note drum beat and another good reason to learn both the eighth note and quarter note versions!
Remember, if you enjoy the journey of learning something new then practice will never be a chore again!
Beginner Video Drum Lesson 8 - More Popular Beginner Drum Grooves
Eighth Note Drum Beat
Quarter Note Drum Beat
Recognise this bass drum pattern at all? Yep, it's the same idea as the bass drum pattern found in Lesson 2a and 2b from Beginner Video Drum Lessons but with the extra bass drum on the + of beat 1 at the beginning of the bar.
Ironically, you will probably find this drum beat easier than the drum beat from Lesson 2a because, as you can see, the first half of the bar is exactly the same as the second half of the bar.

Beginner Video Drum Lesson 9 - More Popular Beginner Drum Grooves
Eighth Note Drum Beat
Quarter Note Drum Beat
Here again are the same bass drum ideas seen in Lesson 3a and 3b from Beginner Video Drum Lessons. The extra bass drum has been added to the + of beat 4 and once more the first half of the bar is now identical to the second half.
The bass drum patterns found in Lesson 1a, 1b, 2a and 2b from Beginner Video Drum Lessons are so common and popular that its well worth learning the variation found in this lesson, as well as the previous lesson 8, becuase they are bound to come up in your playing life.

Beginner Video Drum Lesson 10 - More Popular Beginner Drum Grooves
Eighth Note Drum Beat
Quarter Note Drum Beat
This combines the two different bass drum patterns we've been learning so far into one drum beat. The two bass drums at the beginning of the bar start on the downbeat of beat 1 while the other two bass drums start on the upbeat of beat 2 (the + of beat 2).
This drum beat will help you to hear the difference between these two types of bass drum patterns...and teach you a new cool groove at the same time!

Beginner Video Drum Lesson 11 - More Popular Beginner Drum Grooves
Eighth Note Drum Beat
Quarter Note Drum Beat
This drum beat introduces you to the idea of playing three bass drum notes in a row. Now, you've only been playing drums for a while so you can't be too tough on yourself if you can't play these grooves very fast. Three bass drum notes in a row at a fast tempo is tough! Instead of speed, aim for evenness of notes and clarity of sound.
Tip: Watch out, the quarter note groove is a tricky one. Make sure the hi-hat isn't played with the two bass drums on the + of beat 2 and 3.

Beginner Video Drum Lesson 12 - More Popular Beginner Drum Grooves
Eighth Note Drum Beat
Quarter Note Drum Beat
This is a great groove. I've heard it played on SO many records it's almost unreal. The space between the snare drum on beat 2 and the bass drum on the + of beat 3 really gives the drum beat room to breath and helps it to sound super funky. The way the bass drum pushes into the snare drum on beat 4 just sounds so right.
Tip: This is one of those drum beats that you really need to be counting for. The bass drum all the way near the end of the bar on the + of beat 3 can throw the ears so make sure you know where to play it by counting out loud initially.

Beginner Video Drum Lesson 13 - More Popular Beginner Drum Grooves
Eighth Note Drum Beat
Quarter Note Drum Beat
You know what I always hear in my head when I play this drum beat? The song "Mickey (Hey)". You know, the one that goes "Hey Mickey, you're so fine". This is the same drum beat from that song. It's a good 'un!
Tip: The bass drum is not played on beat 3 but you are probably going to want to. Try to resist that temptation because its the space left by not playing on beat 3 that gives this groove it's unique "feel".

Beginner Video Drum Lesson 14 - More Popular Beginner Drum Grooves
Eighth Note Drum Beat
Quarter Note Drum Beat
This is basically the same drum beat as Lesson 13 except we have an extra bass drum on the + of beat 1. This changes the feel slightly without removing the upbeat feel created by the two bass drums on the + of beat 2 and beat 3.

A Few More Beginner Drum Beats
These next three can't really be classified as popular or common but are still very interesting and fun to play none the less. Treat these as extras to learn if you've nailed the previous 7 lessons.
As you can hopefully see, all we've done so far is simply play around with the bass drum and move in and around the snare drum back beat on beats 2 and 4 of the bar to change the "feel" and sound. These next three are just some more examples of where you might place the bass drum. Quirky and cool ideas!
Beginner Video Drum Lesson 15 - More Popular Beginner Drum Grooves
Eighth Note Drum Beat
Quarter Note Drum Beat
The focus for this drum beat is on the + of beat 2. The single bass drum followed by no other bass drum until the bar repeats itself really adds emphasis to the + of beat 2. A good example of less is more.

Beginner Video Drum Lesson 16 - More Popular Beginner Drum Grooves
Eighth Note Drum Beat
Quarter Note Drum Beat
Again, the emphasis for this drum beat falls on the + of beat 2, just like the drum beat from lesson 15 above. This drum beat has the extra bass drum on the + of beat 4.
Tip: The bass drum on the + of beat 4 is played just before the bass drum on beat 1 when this bar is looped round. Look out for this as it tends to catch drummers out when reading this groove for the first time.

Beginner Video Drum Lesson 17 - More Popular Beginner Drum Grooves
Eighth Note Drum Beat
Quarter Note Drum Beat
Finally, we have another drum beat where the bass drum on the + of beat 4 is played right before the bass drum on beat 1, when the bar is looped. This helps to resolve the drum beat by grounding the two bass drums into beat 1 of the bar.
Tip: If you started this drum beat on beat 3 of the bar then you would actually be playing the same drum beat from lesson 10.
