Difficulty LevelIn this free drum lesson, I have the drum beats from “Closer” by Kings Of Leon, featuring the drumming of Nathan Followill.

Nathan really only plays two drum beats throughout the song. The first transcription shows what he plays during the majority of the performance. The bass drum at the beginning follows a three note rule, playing every third 32nd note. This moves in an interesting way under the steady hi-hat. The snare back beat is flammed and moved to the “+” of beat 2 rather than beat 2 for the first half of the bar. The groove ends with an open hi-hat on the “+” of beat 4 which then closes at the beginning of the next bar.

The second transcription shows what Nathan plays at the end of the song where he moves to either the ride or crash cymbal…it’s up to you. It’s the same groove as before expect the snare back beats are not flammed and an extra bass drum is added to the end of the bar. This extra bass drum only gets played a few times though before Nathan drops it for the rest of the song.
