This free video drum lesson is going to show you how to play the Herta hybrid drum rudiment. This super cool sounding and uber-popular drum lick is used by many great drummers such as Vinnie Colaiuta, Dave Weckl, Carter Beauford, Dave Grohl and many more!

In fact, this drum fill/rudiment idea is often called the Cobham rudiment because Billy Cobham used to play it so much!

It’s not officially a drum rudiment in it’s own right but is used so often that it’s given the un-official title of hybrid drum rudiment.

The basic sticking pattern is RLRL but the timing and rhythm is best explained by watching the video drum lesson below.

The free drum lesson teaches how to play the basic pattern as well as how to orchestrate the lick, or move the drum pattern around the drum kit. The video lesson then goes on to show you how to play the Herta drum rudiment as a drum fill idea, both as triplets and sixteenth notes.

The second half of this free drum lesson shows you how to apply the double bass drum pedal to the Herta drum rudiment. Adding double bass drum to this drum fill idea transforms it from a fast hand pattern to a powerful four limbed super drum lick!

The final part of the video drum lesson moves the double bass drum through the drum pattern and then discusses another great related drum lick, the Blush-Da. This cool sounding drum fill idea is guaranteed to turn heads!
