Difficulty LevelIn this free drum lesson, I have the drum beat from “Life’s What You Make It” by Talk Talk, featuring the drumming of Lee Harris.

Firstly, I’ve always really loved this song. There is something haunting about that deep piano and ghostly guitar…the cool drums are just the icing on the cake!

This was surprisingly difficult for me to transcribe due to all of the toms sounding so similar to each other. The transcription you see is my best interpretation of Lee’s part and certainly how I would play it. The sticking is just a suggestion so feel free to try your own. A tambourine can be heard on the back beat of beat 4 and notice how the bass drum stays steady underneath the singles on the toms.

I also found a live performance where Lee is just playing double handed sixteenth notes on the Hi-Hat instead of this tom tom beat…so you could just play that I guess. But let’s face it, this beat is cooler!
