Difficulty LevelIn this free drum lesson, I have the drum notation for a few of the drum beats from “The Pot” by Tool, featuring the drumming of Danny Carey.

This lesson is just a bit of a tease really as there were so many varied drum beats throughout this song, that it almost didn’t matter which I chose. Especially as Danny is improvising throughout each section ensuring that no two bars are always the same. So here are two that occur at the beginning of a new section in the song…

The first drum beat occurs with the move into the new section at around 1:05. Danny followers the bass guitar riff exactly creating the bass drum pattern you see written. He also uses the opening and closing of the Hi-Hat to add emphasis to certain parts of the bar…throwing in Hi-Hat barks as and when. By the time he plays the third bar of this section in the song Danny has changed the Hi-Hat pattern to the one shown in the second example. This bar is only played once and could be considered to be the simplified version of the first drum beat.

The third drum beat is a cool idea where Danny plays a group of 6 sixteenths across the bar and beat line with his double bass drum. Notice that the bass drum does fall down with the Snare drum back beats on beats 2 and 4.
