In this free video drum lesson, I want to teach you the main drum beat and two of my favourite fills from the song “X-Static” by Foo Fighters, featuring the drumming of Dave Grohl.
The main tom tom groove can be re-orchestrated any way you like. You don’t have to stick to the toms I have chosen to play it on, but I am pretty sure this is how Dave plays it. It features a linear pattern between the bass drum and toms with flammed snare drum back beats falling on beats 2 and 4.
The first drum fill is classic bombastic Dave Grohl fill with huge meaty flams, machine gun snare drum rolls and clever use of the bass drum filling in the gaps. The second drum fill is very similar but uses a more complicated bass drum pattern involving groups of three between the hands and feet. Very cool indeed!
