In this free video drum lesson I’m going to show you how to play a really cool drum fill from the song Bullet In Your Head by Rage Against The Machine. Brad Wilk is the drummer and he totally stamps his signature feel and sound over this drum lick.
I’ve always loved this drum fill and whenever I hear it I can’t help but air drum along to it. Lets take a look at this famous and popular drum lick now…

“Bullet In Your Head” – Drum Fill (1:56 Album Version)
So, as you can see, the drum fill starts at the end of the first bar, on the ‘a’ of beat 4. Two snare drum notes and an open hi-hat “bark” are played three times up to the ‘+’ of beat 3. A single bass drum and open hi-hat is played on the ‘a’ of beat 3, a single bass drum on the ‘e’ of beat 4 and then a crash and snare drum on the ‘+’ of beat 4 ends the drum fill.
All of the open hi-hat notes can be played with either the right or left hand, it doesn’t matter which. Also, the whole lick has a slightly swung “feel” to it. The sixteenths are not played straight and even but are given a slight shuffled/triplet feel. This is what gives Brad Wilks drum parts in this song it’s specific flavour and sound.
