In this free video drum lesson, I want to show you how to play the drum fill intro from the song “Inertiatic ESP” by The Mars Volta, featuring the drumming of Jon Theodore.
The intro fills are built around the drum pattern that I like to call the “Fa-De-Le-Dump”…a triplet based lick used by every drummer since the beginning of time! Jon plays around with this lick and starts in different places of the bar and on different drums. What makes it then 10 times harder is maintaining the Hi-Hat foot on 1/4 notes…but then, that’s what practice is for! 🙂
