In this free drum lesson, I have the drum beats from “Let Me Entertain You” by Robbie Williams, featuring the drumming of Chris Sharrock.
The first transcription shows you how Chris plays the main chorus groove on the recording. You can see that he uses the bass drum to push on key sixteenth notes such as the “a” of both beats 1 and 2. Then we have the signature ride cymbal bell pattern occurring from the “+” of beat 3 and continuing up to the “+” of beat 4. Notice also how Chris plays the bell on beat 2 with the snare drum as well.
The second transcription is what you hear Chris play live. Because the bass drum is quite hard to hear on the recording for the chorus, I decided to watch the live performance and found that Chris plays a similar but not identical pattern. The only difference is the extra snare drum note on the “a” of beat 2 and a solid bass drum on the “+” of beat 3. I guess it’s up to you which of the two versions you would prefer to play.
The third transcription is the verse groove played double handed on the snare drum. Chris maintains the hi-hat foot on eighth notes to help keep time. The bass drum is all about pushes on the “a” of various beats. A little five stroke roll is played at the end of the bar but Chris doesn’t play it every time…so it’s up to you to improvise whilst using it sparingly.
