In this free video drum lesson, I want to show you how to play the drum beat from the guitar solo section of the song “Jump” by Van Halen, featuring the drumming of Alex Van Halen.
The drum beat in question occurs at 2:15 into the song and features Alex just going nuts with the backbeat and syncopation. You’d be forgiven thinking this involves odd time signatures, when in fact, it is all in 4/4! Alex moves the bass and snare drum around disguising where the downbeat actually falls. On top of that, he also plays some cool syncopated Ride cymbal patterns with his right hand.
