In this free drum lesson, I have the drum notation and music for the intro to “Free Flight” by Whitesnake, featuring the drumming of David Dowle.
David Dowle’s right hand must have been on fire after recording this classic Whitesnake tune. Just the intro alone features some really heavy use of ghost notes that are sure to impress!
We also see some other classic licks such as the RRLRR lick around the snare drum backbeat played by many other drummers. Also spot the use of para-diddles to help get the hand into the correct place of the beat.
It might not be possible for most drummers to play the fills due to the number of toms used, but you can always split the fills up onto the number of toms you do have access too. I’m also pretty confident that an effect was used towards the end of the last fill to lower the pitches of the last two beats of the bar. But I wouldn’t be surprised to find out that David just used a ton of Toms!
