In this free drum lesson I’ll be showing you how to play the super cool drum groove from the song “Revelry” by Kings Of Leon.
The great Nathan Followill on drums (looking much better now that he’s lost that beard by the way!) does a stellar job at creating an atmospheric and exciting drum groove to match the song.

Drum Beat Notation
Nathan plays quarter notes on beats 1, 2, 3 and 4 for both bars with his right hand. These hi-hat notes stay steady throughout.
The snare drum is played on beat 3 (at the same time as the hi-hat) and the + of beat 3 (in between the hi-hats) for the first bar and only on beat 3 with the hi-hat in the second bar.
The bass drum does most of the hard work for this drum groove but also gives it it’s cool and quirky sound. The two bass drums on the + and ‘a’ of beat 2 start in between the hi-hats and lead into the snare drum on beat 3. The bass drum on the + of beat 4 in the first bar is played just before the next bass drum on beat 1 of the second bar.
Nathan then plays every third sixteenth note on the bass drum, starting on beat 1 then moving to the ‘a’ of beat 1 and then the + of beat 2.
Have fun with this one, it’s a good ‘un!
