In this free drum lesson, I have both a drum fill and drum beat from “Stinkfist” by Tool, featuring the drumming of Danny Carey.
This song gives us mere mortal drummers the chance at least to play a Tool song without too much sweat…at least at the beginning anyway. It features a drum beat from Danny Carey that is not so crazy but still fits the music perfectly.
The first beat features a heavier Hi-Hat part opening for the full beats of 2 and 4, whilst the bass drum plays a funky double on the downbeat and “e” of beats 1 and 3. Once the verse starts Danny changes up the Hi-Hat pattern so that the Hi-Hat now opens on the “+” of beats 2 and 4. Danny also increases the number of notes played on the Hi-Hat in the second half of each bar.
The drum fill that occurs at 1:35 is a classic for many drummers…it’s the “quad” double bass lick leading into a Snare and Crash on beat 4. I suggest you play the Snare on the “e” of beat 3 with your left hand and then the first two snare notes of the lick as RL.
