In this free drum lesson, I have the drum notation and drum chart for my favourite drum beats and fills from “Eulogy” by Tool, featuring the drumming of Danny Carey.

Lets get straight to THAT drum beat shall we, as I presume this is why most drummers would be reading this free drum lesson. It occurs at 6:36 and features a really cool concept. The Hi-Hat part is playing in groups of three sixteenths that move across the bass drum and snare drum backbeat in a fascinating way. You may also notice that the pattern takes a whole three bars for the Hi-Hat part to return to beat 1. To make it even trickier, Danny is also opening and closing the Hi-Hat with the groups of three giving some really hard foot coordination. This is a real beast of a drum pattern!

I’ve also included two drum fills that also caught my ear towards the end of the song. The first has some lighting fast single strokes whilst the second includes lots of double bass drum…Danny’s favourite “go to” drum fill technique!
