In this free video drum lesson, I want to show you how to play the drum beat from the song “Grace” by Jeff Buckley, featuring the drumming of Matt Johnson.
This drum groove is played on the toms and features a half time snare drum back beat. The song is counted in three’s and so I decided to write the notation in bars of 3/4. Feel free to count differently if you wish though! The thing that makes this drum beat so cool is the clever use of dynamics…ghost notes and accents. Without these dynamics the drum beat wouldn’t sound that special!
